Where are Ron and Ellen?

Virginia Creeper and New River Trails, September 2001

In late September, we loaded the camping gear in the car, put the tandem on the back, and drove to southwestern Virginia. We camped first in the beautiful Mt. Rogers National Forest campground, and spent two days riding the Virginia Creeper Trail, a trail for bikers, hikers, and horseback riders built on an old railroad bed. The trail is 32 miles long, and runs from the town of Abingdon, through Damascus, and then up to the top of Whitetop mountain. Damascus is right in the center of the trail, so the first day we biked from Damascus up to Whitetop (16 miles uphill!) and back, and the second day we biked the almost flat half of the trail from Damascus to Abingdon and back.

We then moved to a campground near the town of Pulaski (not nearly as nice or as beautiful as Mt Rogers), and spent two days biking on the New River Trail, another beautiful rails-to-trails route. This trail is 55 miles, winding along the New River, and is almost completely flat.

Because Ron is part of a group working to build a trail on an old railroad bed near us, he took lots of detailed photos of bridges, gates at road crossings, and other things of interest to local trailbuilders.
