Where are Ron and Ellen?

Troy and Toronto, October 2001

In mid-October we loaded the tandem on the back of the car and drove to Troy, NY, to visit our friends Ned and Linda. Ned is the friend Ron traveled with in September of 2000. We spent and enjoyable (but cold and windy!) day visiting locks along the Mohawk River, an antique car show, and a llama farm. We biked several times on a long (paved!) trail through multiple townships on the Mohawk River.

From Troy, we drove across New York state and into Canada to visit Marlene and John in Toronto. We'd never been in Toronto before, and loved it! It is a very bike-friendly city, with bike trails, bike lanes on many of the streets, and an extensive system of beautiful parks. We did a lot of biking, sightseeing on foot, and ate some wonderful food, including a fine tea for 14 (or was it 15? 16?) on Saturday afternoon. Ellen and Marlene are both tea-lovers, and try to find an elegant place to have tea whenever they are at professional library meetings together.

On the way home, we stopped at Niagara Falls. Ron had never been there; Ellen had been there once before when she was 11 or 12, and remembered it as spectacular. Amazingly, it was just as spectacular as she remembered it! Ron, who had been very dubious about it, suspecting that because it was such a big tourist destination it would be ugly and commercialized, agreed that it was spectacular, and well worth the visit (and not commercialized or ugly).
