Where are Ron and George?
Great Smoky Mountains, September 2001
Ron and George stayed at a National Park campsite outside Bryson City, North Carolina, on the south central side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee. They biked and hiked in the park, and got to know the small town of Bryson City.
From a local real estate agent, they learned about "halfbacks": people who move from the northeastern US to Florida, and after experiencing the Florida summer, move to North Carolina, which is halfway back to their starting point.
After meeting some Mexican kids on bikes, they then visited with a group of Mexican migrants who had been picking local crops and were preparing to move back to Florida for the fall and winter picking season.
They were cooking breakfast on September 11 when the park ranger came and asked if they had heard the news. They listened to news on Ron's small world band radio, and that evening went to a local bar where they watched TV and saw pictures of the planes hitting the WTC.
