At home in Afton, enjoying North Branch School's 30th annual production of St. George and the Dragon, 20 December 2013. The annual production of St. George includes poems, stories, songs and dances in celebration of the Winter Solstice. Many elements of the production are from mummer's plays and Christmas Revels. All students participate (except nursery), so by the time they reach 8th grade they have learned and played many increasingly complex roles, songs, and music. This year Leo is in 8th grade (so it was his last St. George) and Simon is in 6th.
Acting out the folk tale about the Three Wise Men of Chelm. Leo is on the right.
Musicians playing Welcome Winter. Simon is wearing the blue hat.
The entire cast sings Young Riders. Simon is again in the blue hat, and behind him in the back row you can just see the top of Leo's brown hat and his red-cloaked shoulder.
Among The Fool's treasures are the constellations of the zodiac. Simon as Taurus.
Leo plays solo recorder for the Gower Wassail.
Musicians playing the Breton Tune to which the fight between St. George and the Dragon is choreographed. Leo is on the left in the hat.
The sword dance. Simon is in the center.
In the mummer's play, the Doctor comes with his assistant to try and revive St. George from his death-like sleep. In this year's version the Tardis brought the Doctors Who (Past, Present, and Future) with Rose as their assistant. Leo, in dark hat and dark jacket, is Dr. Who of the Future.
As Dr. Who of the Future, Leo considers the nature of time: "People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly... timey-wimey... stuff."
Leo (second from right) and classmates celebrate after the play. Dr. Who Past, Dr. Who Present, Dr. Who Future, and B'ub (the rebellious devil son of the very traditional Beelze - "Oh, dad, you are so fifteenth century!")
