Dear family and friends,

Everyone is packed up and ready to start home. Ron flies out of São Paulo tomorrow (Tuesday 3 March), arriving in DC late tomorrow evening, and Steven and Laurie fly from Cusco to Lima tomorrow, then home to Eugene, Oregon, on 5 March. I think all three of them will be glad to be home, and I am certainly looking forward to having Ron back.

On Saturday Ron said, "Tomorrow morning I am going to Eduardo's house and we will play soccer in the morning and I will spend the night at his house, returning to the hostel on Monday. Yesterday I went to his sister's place for lunch with all the family for a visiting cousin from Germany. Top floor penthouse with a wonderful breeze and view. Went to the central market and their main park today. The park was so big I got lost a couple of times. Found out I can get into museums and ride buses for free since I am over 60. Nice. So I just get on and off buses to make my way across town without having to understand the routes and destinations. Just use my map of the city to navigate."

And on Sunday afternoon, he sent a brief email saying, "Survived the soccer game. Ran a lot up and down the field and actually had contact with the ball a few times. Good experience and I like the guys. Mostly professionals in their 40s and 50s I am guessing."

Here in Virginia we had about 5 inches (13 cm) of snow last night and it is quite cold. I have warned Ron that there will still be snow on the ground when I pick him up at Dulles airport tomorrow night -- quite a shock after weeks in a tropical climate!

Love to all,

Ellen
