Travel plans, January 2006 - March 2006

Ron had originally planned to go to Ethiopia from France, after Ellen returned home on 20 October 2005, and return home on 11 January 2006. Because Ellen's mother died while we were in France, Ron came home with Ellen to attend the memorial service. He now leaves for Ethiopia from the U.S. on 24 January, returning on 30 March.

After some orientation and information gathering in Addis Ababa, he plans to follow a bicycle route described here, going north from Addis Ababa to Lalibela (via Debre Birhan and Dessie - see map), and then will probably go further north (with or without bike) to Axum before returning to Addis Ababa

After spending some time in Ethiopia, Ron may go to Djibouti to get a visa for Eritrea (you can't cross the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea because they are arguing about where the border is), and spend a bit of time in Eritrea. Or he may decide to stay in Ethiopia the entire time.

He'll return home on 30 March 2006.

Ron will communicate with Ellen during the trip, and she'll distribute his reports to the mailing list and post them on the Web. Photos of Ethiopia and Eritrea will have to wait until Ron gets home. (Although Ron promised photos from Burma and Cambodia in fall of 2003, and never organized them for Ellen to post, so don't hold your breath for those Ethiopia and Eritrea photos!)

Time zones? Ethiopia is 8 hours ahead of Afton, so when it is noon in Afton it is 8 pm in Ethiopia.
