Contemporary and traditional in the central plaza in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The men near the fountain are wearing the traditional felt hats of Kyrgyzstan. Ellen bought an identical pair of striped knee socks in Tashkent (but not the rest of the outfit!).

Women in Khiva, Uzbekistan. Notice the shoes: two pairs of fancy heels, one pair of slippers and socks. We saw lots of women with heels, and also many with fancy dresses worn with socks and what we would use as bedroom slippers.

Wedding party in Khiva. This was obviously a prime spot for wedding photos; we sat on a low wall beside this street for about an hour and saw five different wedding groups, each with their own video photographer.

Couple in Samarkand. We were walking down a side street, and passed them. She was sweeping the pavement in front of the door and he was painting the doorway. Ron took a photo, and then they wanted to pose for a more formal photo.
