Where are Ron and Ellen?

Ron leaves for Indonesia on 30 November 2010, flying to Singapore, then taking a ferry either directly to Sumatra or to one of the smaller islands between Sumatra and Singapore. As you can see from the Sumatra map below, it isn't very far from Singapore via ferry.

He'll spend time wandering around Sumatra, then go on to Java.

After exploring Java for a while, he will return to Singapore in February 2011 to meet Ellen. Ellen leaves home on 9 February and flies to Singapore. We'll spend a few days visiting friends who live in Singapore, then on 14 February we fly to Sulawesi, flying into Ujung Pandang (also called Makassar) on the southwestern tip of this oddly shaped island (see map below). We'll stay in Ujung Pandang a day or two, then head slowly north to Lake Poso, in the center of the island. After several days at the lake, we'll travel south again, cross by ferry to the southeast arm of the island, and head to Bau Bau, a town on the southern tip of Butun Island, the big island at the end of the southeastern arm. There we will meet Thierry and Sylvie, our friends from France, and will travel with them for about two weeks, exploring the southeastern corner of Sulawesi. Thierry is a diver, and is interested in possibilities for a dive business. We are happy to tag along to beautiful beaches and islands as he checks things out!

We fly from Ujung Pandang to Singapore on 14 March, spend the night in Singapore, then leave Singapore on 15 March, arriving home late evening on 15 March.

No bikes on this trip -- although Ron says he might buy a cheap one to use while he is traveling on his own.

Ellen will be sending out and posting travel accounts, from Ron between 30 November and 9 February, and from both of us between 9 February and 15 March.
